I'm going to compete in a talent competition that I've been to before, this January. I need a Broadway song and it's actually one of the rare occasions where it's okay if it's overdone! I'm fifteen years old and am an extremely high soprano, but can sing some (but not too terribly low) alto parts. I'd like a song that showcases my voice, and gives me a chance to really work the crowd, if you know what I mean. It needs to be a big "performance song." It definitely needs to be a majorly Broadway song, and while it's okay to have one that's overdone, I'd like to have one that's well known but yet one that everyone in the showbusiness world is NOT sick to death of hearing. I know I'm being kind of picky here, but does anyone have any ideas? Last year the girl who won sang Think of Me from Phantom of the Opera. One more thing to take into consideration is the fact that the songs should be no longer than 2 and a half minutes long. Ideas?
What's a good Broadway song for a soprano for a talent competition?say yes
If you're a high soprano, check out Glitter and be Gay from Candide. It's a comic song, very funny and a total show stopper. You do have to have a good range and flexible voice though - it hits high Eb 6 times, 4 staccato and 2 sustained. It's longer than 2 1/2 minutes, but you can cut it. There are several versions on You Tube, including one by Kristin Chenoweth which is hilarious!
Good luck!

I was thinking about Think of Me. The Wizard and I from Wicked might be a little low but check it out. I Dreamed A Dream or On my Own from Les Miserables. Green Finch and Linnet Bird from Sweeney Todd. It's not overdone and you can do a lot with expression and dynamics. It's for a soprano, the range isn't terribly large but I still think it could showcase your voice. I would suggest listening to the 2005 revival cast recording with Lauren Molina..she does an excellent job with it and will give you an idea of how you can work with the expressive side of the song.
Some other possible choices would be My White Knight from The Music Man (that's a good one for range) or Home from Beauty and the Beast.
